# API Keys

> Create, rotate and delete API keys for programmatic access to UptimeIO

API keys let scripts, CI/CD pipelines and other tools access your UptimeIO account. Create and manage them here in the dashboard.

## Create an API key

  <Step title="Open the API Keys tab">
    Click **Settings** in the sidebar, then select the **API Keys** tab.

  <Step title="Create the key">
    Click **Create API Key**. Enter a **Name** that describes its purpose, such as `CI/CD Pipeline` or `Terraform`.

  <Step title="Choose the permissions">
    Select **Permissions**:

    | Permission | Allows |
    | - | - |
    | **Read Only** | Reading data such as monitors, incidents and reports |
    | **Read & Write** | Reading and changing data, such as creating monitors and acknowledging incidents |

    Start with **Read Only** unless the tool needs to make changes.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Copy the key">
    Click **Copy API Key** and store it in your secret manager.

    <Warning>
      You can see the full key only once. It cannot be retrieved later. If you lose it, rotate it or create a new key.

## Rotate or delete a key

| Action | What happens |
| - | - |
| **Rotate Key** | Creates a new key and revokes the old one. Update your applications with the new key. |
| **Delete Key** | Revokes the key permanently. Applications that use it stop working. |

Each key in the list shows its name, a preview of the key and its permissions.

## Who can manage keys

Only owners and admins can create, rotate and delete API keys. Other roles see the list, or an empty state if no keys exist.

## Use the key

Send the key in the `X-API-Key` header of each request. API keys are available on every plan.
